An initial meeting with a couple tells me a lot about the wedding day they’re planning; more than just the facts of what is discussed, it gives me an understanding about their relationship and their individual characters, helping me to tailor my approach to their day to get the best out of their photographs. I first met Sarah and Benny in central London over a coffee, and I knew from that point it would be a wedding I would look forward to over the coming 12 months leading up to the day. I flew to the Dordogne in France with Matt from Teardrop films. We drove south west to Lanouaille where we went straight to Chateau La Durantie to meet the guests and to capture the activities and games that they had in store. The chateau was set amongst oak forests and vineyards which stretched as far as the eye could see, with vibrant colours sweeping across the landscape. This made for the most stunning setting for the weekend’s celebrations.
Despite the unpredictable weather on the morning of the wedding, the day started early with the gents heading out to a local golf course for a swift nine holes. For those of you that do not follow me on social media (please follow me here), golf is my passion second only to photography. The morning was a lot of fun, and I was roped into hitting a drive, suited and booted on a dewy morning – let’s just say this made for a hazardous combination! Back at the chateau, the preparations were in full swing with hair and makeup underway. The atmosphere in the air once the boys returned was quite magical, the chance of a glimpse of one another was something very special to experience and set the tone for the day.
The final shot of the night has gone on to become one of my signature images. An impromptu dance-off between the boys and girls lead to the groom attempting the Dirty Dancing lift with the 6 foot 5” usher! Within seconds, Sarah made the eyes at Benny and threw herself at him - to everyone’s amazement it was pulled off to perfection! I think the fact that Benny is a professional rugby player certainly helped, but it was a spontaneous moment that I will never forget.
Sarah and Benny were quite simply a joy to be around, a fun and charismatic couple with a great group of like-minded family and friends. I wish you both the best for your future, and for the imminent new arrival.
Thank you for taking the time to indulge in Sarah and Benny's story. If you would like to keep up to date with more of my upcoming work over the course of the 2016 wedding season, please follow me here, or via the links below.
